What’s an AU?

AU is short for “alternative universe.” It’s when a fan takes a story and runs with a different version of it. Same characters, a whole different world. The digital circus as a grimy casino, or a horror, or a family raising kids in the suburbs. Some are one person’s ongoing comic. Others are a whole little world that loads of people draw and write for. Loreign catalogs them.

What gets listed

An AU needs its own identity and keeps its own internal continuity. It has a name or a clear premise, and enough work around it that people know it as “that AU.” A single drawing or a one-off scene doesn’t qualify as an AU on its own. That’s a fanwork, something made inside an AU rather than an AU itself.

Where it’s posted

Doesn’t matter. Tumblr, YouTube, AO3, Twitter, a Carrd, all equal here. Loreign tracks an AU wherever its pieces live and links you to each one at the source.

Unverified by default

I build most cards from public information, so a card stays marked unverified until its creator confirms it. If an AU is yours, you’re the one in charge of it. You can claim it, correct it, or have it taken down. Just ask.
